Since being elected, one of my first priorities has been to respond to the concerns many residents raised during my election campaign about the Middleton Road and Jellicoe Road cycle lane schemes. At our first Full Council meeting, I submitted a motion calling for a full review of the projects — focussing on the design, impact, the way the projects were implemented, whether the schemes were value for money, and critically whether there are changes which can be made to improve the layouts and correct the safety issues which have been introduced.

This motion was put forward because it had become clear that the scheme, introduced under the government’s Active Travel Fund, has generated significant local frustration. Many residents, businesses, and road users have told me they feel the changes were imposed without meaningful consultation and have resulted in confusion, congestion, and reduced accessibility for residents and businesses.

My motion asked Norfolk County Council to:

• Conduct a full, evidence‑based review of the cycle lane schemes
• Assess safety, traffic flow, business impact, and accessibility
• Engage properly with residents, traders, and road users
• Report back with clear options, including potential redesign or removal if justified

This is not about being “anti‑cycling”. It is about ensuring that infrastructure is well‑designed, locally appropriate, and genuinely beneficial. Good active travel schemes can and do work — but only when they are shaped with communities, not imposed upon them.
