Standing Up for Residents: Illegal Vape and Tobacco Crackdown Gains Serious Momentum

Really productive multi‑agency meeting this afternoon with Norfolk County Council Trading Standards, Great Yarmouth Borough Council officers, my fellow councillors Cllr Jon Wedon, Cllr Callum Ward-Kendall, Cllr Kevin Huggins Cllr Daniel McGrath and the Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health Cllr Scott Hussey.
Our push over recent months is delivering real results the town simply hasn’t seen before, and produced an operational template that NCC is now looking to roll out across other districts within Norfolk. Five vape shops have already been hit with closure orders, and more cases are actively being worked on right now. This is real, visible progress.
And to be absolutely clear, just because you haven’t seen closures in Gorleston or other areas yet, it does NOT mean those shops are in the clear, nor that they have been overlooked, they haven’t. Enforcement is happening everywhere, but can only happen when the law allows it.
Every action taken must be intelligence‑led. We cannot raid premises without lawful grounds, that’s the reality, whether we like it or not. But when we do have intelligence, that allows trading standards and Great Yarmouth Borough Council to act decisively.
There’s a huge amount of work happening behind the scenes, and your information is what drives it.
👉Do NOT support these shops by buying illicit or illegal products.
👉Do NOT give them your business – it only keeps them operating.
If you have any information about illegal tobacco, cigarettes or vape sales in our constituency:
◆ Contact Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133
◆ Report anonymously online via the link in the comments section
If you or someone you know is being coerced into preparing, distributing or selling illegal tobacco:
◆ Report it to HMRC at https://www.gov.uk/report-tax-fraud
◆ Or call the HMRC Fraud Hotline: 0800 788 887
◆ If you believe someone may be a victim of exploitation or modern slavery, the Modern Slavery Helpline: 0800 0121 700 can provide support and advice
Community reporting = more closures, more enforcement and more impact.
Thanks as always to Cllr Scott Hussey for backing this tough, proactive approach in Great Yarmouth.
